In China, being a farmer is a disgrace. The Government’s policy discriminates against people of rural origin everywhere. The United Nations Development Report claims that if Guizhou were a country, its human development index would only surpass Namibia’s, but if Shanghai were compared to a country, it would be comparable to Portugal’s. With the development of economy, the gap between urban and rural areas has increased, and the gap between the rich and the poor has increased. In 2005, China’s Gini coefficient, the main indicator of the gap between rich and poor, was close to 0.47. The dual economy of urban and rural areas has led to serious discrimination against farmers. So, in China, when farmers are a disgrace, farmers have no dignity.

What’s the point of such a life? The dual division of urban and rural areas caused by the household registration system is quite different from the economic and cultural level of urban and rural areas.
